Dental crowns are special custom coverings put on existing teeth. Crowns are usually made from tooth-colored porcelain, glass, ceramic, or metal, and they can improve how a decayed or broken tooth looks while making it stronger and longer lasting.
A tooth crown can be used when too much of the original tooth is missing, such as after root canal treatment. They are also used to hold a dental appliance like a bridge or denture in place, protect a weak tooth from breaking, and to cover badly-shaped or stained teeth.
During your first visit, the dentist will first numb the tooth, remove any decay or filling material, and then shape the tooth for an accurate fit. Several impressions or molds of it will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory to create your permanent crown. A temporary tooth cap will then be put on your tooth to protect it.
At your next visit about two weeks later, the temporary crown will be taken off, your tooth will be cleaned, and your permanent tooth crown will be cemented into place after being carefully checked for the proper fit.
If you have a cracked tooth, a fractured filling, or just want to cover a discolored tooth, make an appointment at Dentistry Of Oxnard today to see if a dental crown is the best solution for you.
