White and Tooth Colored Fillings
White colored fillings or tooth colored fillings are used to repair cracked teeth, broken teeth, teeth with cavities, or teeth that have been worn down from misuse such as from nail-biting or tooth grinding.
The dentist will remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth and then fill the area where the decayed material was removed.
First, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the area around the tooth to be filled. Next, a drill, laser or air abrasion instrument will be used to remove the decayed area. Your dentist will decide which instrument to use for this cavity filling.
Next, the area will be probed to make sure all the decay has been removed. Once the decay has been removed, the dentist will prepare the space for the filling by cleaning the cavity of any remaining bacteria and debris. If the decayed area is near the tooth's root, your dentist may put in a liner made of a composite resin, glass ionomer cement, or another material to cover and protect the nerve. After the tooth filling is in, your dentist will polish and finish it.
