Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth.

Dental Implants

Surgically placed dental implants replace missing or damaged natural teeth with metal, screw-like posts and artificial teeth that look and function much like real ones. Dental implants can be a great alternative to dentures or bridgework that doesn't fit well, and can be an acceptable option when the roots of natural teeth can't accommodate denture or bridge replacements.

The type of dental implantology used depends on the implant and the physical condition of the jawbone, and it may involve several procedures. The biggest benefit of surgically-set implants is the solid support you get for your new teeth because it requires the jawbone to heal tightly around each titanium metal implant post.

Implants won't slip, make noise or cause bone damage the way fixed bridges or dentures might. Also, the materials can't decay like your own teeth that have to support regular bridgework. The best implants also provide solid support for other types of dental prostheses.

The downside to having dental implant surgery?  Healing from the surgery requires time and the entire process can take months.

Dental implants may be the right solution for you if you:

  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Have a jawbone that's fully grown
  • Have enough bone to secure the implants or accommodate a bone graft
  • Have healthy oral tissues and don't smoke
  • Have no overall health conditions that would affect bone healing
  • Are unable or unwilling to wear dentures
  • Are willing to commit several months to the process

If there isn't enough bone for a solid implant, additional bone can be grafted or built up vertically or horizontally to strengthen the area. A leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (LPRF) concentrate may also be applied to optimize wound healing and stimulate bone formation.

During dental implant surgery, the oral surgeon will make a cut to open the gum and expose the bone. A hole is then drilled deeply into the bone where the metal post for the dental tooth implant will be placed to serve as the tooth's root.

Now, for a short time, there will be a gap where the tooth is missing. A type of partial, temporary denture can be placed over it for appearance if needed. It can be removed for cleaning and while you sleep.

At your next visit, the metal implant post is screwed into the jawbone and osseointegration begins as the jawbone grows into and fuses with the dental implant. This process can take several months but it provides a solid base for a new artificial tooth.

Once osseointegration is complete, additional outpatient surgery is needed to place the abutment (or post extension) where the crown (artificial tooth) will eventually attach. This is typically done with local anesthesia in your dentist's office.

Should an implant become infected for any reason and cause peri-implantitis, new tooth laser technologies exist that can reduce inflammation and promote tissue and bone regeneration, all without having to remove and replace the implant itself.
